Explore C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien’s World
Trace the ‘thought-steps’ of two of the most famous writers of Oxford and the U.K, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, and follow their inspirations and notable moments in their lives through the city and its university.
From their beginnings in the literary group known as The Inklings, where they discussed their stories in The Eagle and Child pub on St Giles, to Tolkien’s tenure as Professor at Merton College, our guide will take you around the historical landmarks of Oxford that the two authors lived and worked in.
C.S. Lewis is most famous for his series The Chronicles of Narnia, though he also wrote many essays on religious ideas. His books have been turned into a TV series, and a film series, and the inspiration began here in Oxford, where he studied at University College.
J.R.R. Tolkien’s most well-known and revered works are The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The land of Middle-Earth was inspired by the Cotswolds and Oxford city, Tolkien first put pen to paper on this epic while at Merton College.
